Lifetime Licence vs Adobe Subscription
What does “lifetime” really mean, what renews, and when does paying once beat an Adobe subscription?
One more subscription?
One of the things that drives me mad these days is how many subscriptions we’re expected to maintain. Streaming, cloud storage, software, the lot. Individually they seem manageable; together they can be surprisingly expensive.
Photography software is no exception. A one-time licence sounds appealing, but it helps to understand exactly what is included and which extras might renew.
So here’s the straightforward version of how Luminar pricing compares with Lightroom and Photoshop, without pretending products with different features and contracts cost exactly the same.
1. Can you buy Luminar once?
Yes. Skylum offers perpetual licences for Luminar desktop software. That means the purchased application can continue to be used without paying the conventional monthly application subscription.
But “lifetime” does not automatically mean every future major upgrade or premium cloud-assisted AI service is free forever. Those can have separate conditions.
2. Desktop Only, All Platforms and Max
Desktop Only is aimed at people editing mainly on a Mac or Windows computer. All Platforms adds supported mobile and web applications and cross-device features. Max includes wider benefits through Luminar Prime.
Before purchasing, check the current device allowance, supported platforms and specific AI entitlements. Some features and syncing directions may vary.
A photographer who works at one desk might not need the broader package. Somebody who frequently edits while travelling might value mobile access. There’s little point paying for benefits you won’t use.
3. What happens to AI tools after a year?
This is the small-print detail I’d want everybody to understand. Skylum’s pricing page says that certain generative or premium AI features, including Restoration, GenErase, GenSwap, GenExpand and AI Assistant, have a 365-day access period with qualifying perpetual purchases. Continued access can require Luminar Prime.
Core editing features such as Sky AI and Light Depth are distinguished from those time-limited services. A perpetual desktop licence does not automatically stop working when the premium period ends.
Max includes an initial year of Prime, and auto-renewal terms deserve careful attention at checkout. Check whether any optional renewal has been selected and how to cancel it if you do not want it.
4. How much does Adobe cost in Ireland?
Adobe’s Irish plan comparison, checked on 29 October 2026, lists Lightroom with 1 TB at €14.74 per month and Photography with 1 TB at €24.19 per month, both including VAT on an annual contract billed monthly.
The Photography plan adds Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, while the Lightroom plan targets its cloud-oriented editing workflow. The annual contract matters. Monthly billing does not necessarily mean a month-to-month cancellation arrangement.
Prices and included benefits may change, so the dated figures below are a snapshot rather than a guarantee.
5. A simple three-year comparison
At those Adobe monthly prices, Lightroom works out at €176.88 over one year and €530.64 over three years. Photography works out at €290.28 for one year and €870.84 across three years, assuming rates stay unchanged.
Skylum’s advertised Black Friday offer was quoted in US dollars, including $99 for Desktop Only, $139 for All Platforms and $159 for Max. Taxes, local currency, affiliate eligibility and optional renewals may change the checkout amount.
That is why I would not convert a dollar promotional headline into a supposedly exact Irish purchase price. Compare the real basket total in euros, then add any renewals you actually intend to keep.
| Adobe Ireland plan | Per month* | 12 months* | 36 months* |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightroom, 1 TB | €14.74 | €176.88 | €530.64 |
| Photography, 1 TB | €24.19 | €290.28 | €870.84 |
*Prices checked 29 October 2026, Irish annual plans billed monthly, VAT included. Multi-year amounts assume no price changes and continued subscriptions. Confirm live pricing and cancellation terms at Adobe. Skylum promotions may use USD and vary at checkout.
6. When is Luminar better value?
A perpetual licence can be attractive when you mainly edit on a desktop and can happily continue with the included features for several years. Paying once may be significantly cheaper than maintaining an Adobe plan.
But if you repeatedly purchase major upgrades, renew premium AI access and still need Lightroom Classic’s catalogue or Photoshop’s advanced tools, the comparison changes. Price is only one measure of value.
7. Do you already own an editor?
If you are already happy with the software you have, there is no great reason to spend money because a sale is ending. If you already own a Luminar product, check the personalised upgrade offer rather than assuming a new licence is your only option.
I would always test a programme with my own RAW files before buying when possible. Cheap software you never enjoy using isn’t much of a bargain.
8. My Luminar reader discount
I have an affiliate relationship with Skylum and use the discount code NEIL, advertised as 10% off eligible purchases. Promotions may not combine, so check the final checkout total and relevant renewal terms.
The price you pay should be the one shown at checkout, not a discount percentage in a headline.
Final thoughts
I like that photographers can still choose between a perpetual licence and a subscription. Different budgets and workflows deserve different options.
The right purchase is the one that gives you the tools you need, at a cost you understand, and perhaps leaves a little money for the next photographic adventure. Thanks so much for reading, folks. Take it easy, everyone. Cheers!
