🚀 First-edition photography expedition
This is a small-group, photography-first expedition. The photographic framework is researched and scouted in advance, while roughly 30% of the schedule remains responsive to weather, mist, volcanic conditions, tides, crowds, local activity and the energy of the group. The aim is not to collect locations. It is to spend our time where the photography genuinely earns it.

"Indonesia could very easily become a race through famous places. I want to do the opposite. We will give Borobudur, Bromo and Ijen the time they deserve, but keep moving before a location becomes repetitive. The journey should feel varied: temples and rice fields, volcanic calderas, mist, waterfalls, working landscapes and — if you add Lombok — a final few days slowing everything down beside the ocean. We will work hard when the photograph is worth it and recover when it is not."

Aug 25
Yogyakarta arrival & welcome
Arrival, recovery and introductions. Nothing essential is scheduled after a long-haul travel day; the expedition begins properly once everyone has slept.

Aug 26
Yogyakarta culture & Prambanan
A relaxed human/craft session in the morning, followed by recovery and a dedicated Prambanan sunset and blue-hour session. The cultural photography will favour genuine working environments over tourist demonstrations.

Move to Borobudur / Magelang
A short move buys us better positioning for the next dawns. We settle close to the photographic work rather than commuting from Yogyakarta simply to avoid changing hotels.

Aug 27–29
Borobudur, mist & volcanic countryside
Three nights give us several distinct photographic propositions: Borobudur at first light, one carefully chosen elevated temple-and-mist viewpoint, and a rural Merapi/Merbabu session among rice, villages and working agriculture. We are not collecting every viewpoint in the area; scouting decides which ones actually deserve our time.

Central Java → Bromo
A deliberate long transfer and recovery day. Music, reading and sleep are part of the expedition too. We arrive close to the Tengger caldera ready for the most intensive photographic chapter.

Aug 30–Sep 1
Bromo / Tengger — three-night photographic core
Classic sunrise, a lower or more intimate dawn, telephoto mist and layers, Sea of Sand, Tengger agriculture, sunset and conditional astro. Three nights are deliberate: enough weather opportunity without asking a workshop group to reshoot the same volcano indefinitely.

Bromo → Tumpak Sewu
We leave the open volcanic caldera for rainforest and water. This change of visual language is intentional: photographic patience is valuable, but photographic stagnation is not.

Sep 2–3
Tumpak Sewu — rainforest and moving water
The upper viewpoint is the core photographic session: a huge tropical waterfall, atmosphere and potentially Semeru beyond it. A more demanding lower descent may be offered only if scouting confirms it is worthwhile and conditions make it safe; it is not required of the group.

Tumpak Sewu → Ijen Highlands
Another purposeful transfer, followed by a quieter highland afternoon. Coffee, agriculture, mist or simply recovery prepare us for the expedition's most demanding outing.

Ijen Highlands & preparation
A deliberately lighter day: local highland photography if conditions are worthwhile, equipment preparation and an early night. We do not turn every available hour into a compulsory shoot.

Ijen crater-rim dawn
The physically hardest session of the main expedition: a pre-dawn climb for the crater lake, sulphur, rock and mountain layers. The day after the climb is protected; blue fire is not the reason we are here.

Java finale & onward travel
A relaxed finish for Java-only participants. Those continuing to Lombok transition into the post-extension without forcing a major photography session onto the travel day.

East Sumba — Wild Coast & Savannah — 4 nights / 5 days
A compact East Sumba chapter rather than an island-hopping road rally. One base gives us time for tide-dependent coast, savannah, horses when naturally present and one genuine working-life/cultural session before travelling together to Java.

Lombok — Wild Seascapes — 4 nights / 5 days
One South Lombok base and a deliberate change of pace after Java. This is not an island tour: it is four nights of serious ground-level seascape photography, tide, wave timing, filters, shutter speed and recovery.

The rhythm of the expedition
Strong opportunity without turning the workshop into an endurance test.
70% researched structure
The bases, major photographic anchors, permits, access and transfer logic are researched in advance. We move for a reason, not to collect map pins.
30% responsive freedom
Mist, cloud, volcanic conditions, local activity and tides can change the day. A failed sunrise is not a failed expedition, and we do not remain in one place indefinitely waiting for perfection.
Recovery is part of the design
Transfer days can be recovery days. Midday rest follows demanding dawns, and the Ijen block deliberately protects sleep before and recovery after the climb.
Astro can replace dawn
The Bromo dates sit close to the September 1, 2027 new moon, but astro remains conditional. If we have a genuinely late night, the following dawn can be dropped rather than accumulating unnecessary sleep debt.

Questions
Before you register interest
Do I need to book Sumba or Lombok?
No. The 14-day Java expedition is designed to begin and end cleanly on its own. East Sumba is an optional pre-extension and Lombok an optional post-extension, each with separate pricing.
What if only one person books an extension?
The extension can still operate. The public rate is €1,949 if only one participant books and €1,649 pp once two or more join. If a second participant joins after you have booked solo, your price is automatically reduced to the 2+ rate. Optional twin-sharing with Neil may be used where mutually comfortable.
How difficult is the expedition?
Most of the journey is easy to moderate, with early starts, tropical heat, uneven surfaces and some rough-road travel. Ijen is the exception: it involves a substantial pre-dawn uphill walk and is the physically hardest session. A credible non-hiker photographic alternative is part of the Edition Zero testing before the commercial departure.
Are the August–September 2027 dates final?
August 21–September 11 is the current locked planning window, with the Java main expedition running August 25–September 7. The sequence has been positioned around the Bromo new-moon window. Before deposits are taken we will reconfirm long-range tide tables, domestic flight schedules, park closures and volcanic operating conditions; a very small date adjustment may be made if those factors materially improve the expedition.
What happens if Bromo or Ijen is closed?
Volcanoes, wildfire, weather and park management can change access. The expedition cannot guarantee an individual natural location will be open. Edition Zero is specifically tasked with developing strong alternative photography in the Tengger highlands, agriculture, villages and the Ijen region so that a closure does not simply become a hotel day.
What does 70 / 30 flexibility mean?
Roughly 70% of the expedition is researched structure: bases, key sessions, access and logistics. The remaining 30% allows us to react to the conditions actually in front of us. A promising mist forecast, safer tide, local activity or a late astro session may change the next morning. Flexibility is part of the product, not a lack of planning.
