Neil's take
From Neil
"Portugal's coast is one of Europe's best-kept photography secrets. This road trip connects two of the continent's most photogenic cities — Porto and Lisbon — via a wild Atlantic coastline of lighthouses, surf towns, and misty palaces. Three bases, seven days, and a van full of camera gear. It's the perfect one-week photography adventure."
About this trip
7 days. Three bases. Portugal's wild coast.
From Porto's fiery lighthouses to Lisbon's sunlit miradouros, this 7-day photography journey traces Portugal's most dramatic coastline — where wild Atlantic light meets timeless human stories. Each day unveils new contrasts: the tidal isolation of Capela do Senhor da Pedra, the adrenaline of Nazaré's big-wave surfers, and the delicate sand bridges of Baleal's tombolo at golden hour.
You'll shoot Berlengas Island's fortress ruins rising from turquoise waters, then pivot to Sintra's misty palaces where peacocks roam through enchanted gardens. Whether you're drawn to urban geometry or raw seascapes, small-group coaching ensures you'll master both technical skills and the art of storytelling. Portugal's coast doesn't just inspire photos — it demands them.
What you'll master
Four skills this trip will sharpen

Turning Atlantic swells and moving clouds into ethereal visual poems — from Porto's lighthouses to Nazaré's surf
Architectural composition
Finding symmetry and leading lines in grand palaces, ancient chapels, and fortress ruins
Golden-hour cityscapes
Capturing Lisbon's secret rooftops and Porto's Ribeira as the light turns amber and the city begins to glow
Visual storytelling
Learning to weave coastal drama and urban texture into a cohesive narrative across seven days on the road
Itinerary
How the 7 days unfold
1
Day
Arrival Porto — Ribeira at dusk
Airport pickup. Settle into our first base. Afternoon orientation and gear check, then straight out for golden hour at Farolim de Felgueiras — Porto's iconic lighthouse — followed by blue hour along the Ribeira district. Welcome dinner overlooking the Douro.
2
Day
Porto dawn — Capela do Senhor da Pedra
Dawn shoot from the Dom Luís I Bridge. Morning exploring Porto's tiled facades and narrow streets. Afternoon drive south to the isolated beach chapel of Capela do Senhor da Pedra — one of Portugal's most striking coastal landmarks — for sunset and long-exposure work as the tide surrounds it.
3
Day
South to Nazaré — big waves & surf culture
Morning drive down the coast. Arrive in Nazaré — home of the world's biggest surfable waves. Shoot the surfers at Praia do Norte from the clifftop, then the colourful fishing boats on the main beach at sunset. Check into our second base.
4–5
Days
Baleal tombolo & Berlengas Island
Two days working the central coast. Dawn at Baleal's sand-bridge tombolo — a photographer's dream at low tide. Day trip by boat to the Berlengas archipelago: fortress ruins, turquoise waters, and seabird colonies on a granite island reserve. Evening editing sessions and seafood dinners.
6
Day
Sintra's enchanted palaces
Morning drive into the misty hills of Sintra. A full day photographing the whimsical Pena Palace, the mysterious gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, and the Moorish castle ruins. The light filtering through ancient trees here is unlike anywhere else in Portugal. Late afternoon drive into Lisbon. Check into our final base.
7
Day
Lisbon golden hour & departure
Dawn from a secret miradouro overlooking the red rooftops of the old city. Morning wandering through Alfama's narrow lanes. Final group portfolio review over pastéis de nata. Afternoon transfers to Lisbon Airport. You leave with a body of work that traces an entire coastline.
The rhythm of the trip
What a typical day feels like
First light
We're in position before dawn — whether that's a Porto lighthouse, a Nazaré clifftop, or a Lisbon miradouro. Neil has already scouted the spot. You arrive, set up, and catch the first break of light. No guesswork.
Midday is yours
After the morning session, we eat well — pastéis de nata, fresh seafood, strong Portuguese coffee. The middle of the day is deliberately unscheduled. Edit, rest, explore, or sit with a view. Neil is around if you want to talk images.
The second session
Late afternoon we head back out for golden hour and twilight. The Atlantic light at this hour is low, warm, and cinematic. We shoot until the colour drains from the sky — often finishing long after the sun has set.
Evenings
Dinner together at a local tasca — always somewhere Neil knows. Some nights we review images as a group over a glass of Vinho Verde. Others, it's just good food, slow conversation, and an early night before the next dawn.

Questions
Things people ask before they book
What's the road trip format — how much driving is involved?
We use three bases across the week — Porto, the central coast near Nazaré, and Lisbon. Drives between bases are around 2–3 hours, always timed to avoid the best light. Neil drives, so you can edit, nap, or watch the coast roll by. On shooting days, drives to locations are short — typically 15–30 minutes.
What camera gear do I need for this trip?
A wide-angle (16–35mm equivalent) for seascapes and architecture, and a short telephoto (70–200mm) for compressing landscapes and isolating details. A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures along the coast. A full kit list is sent after booking.
What's the fitness level — how demanding is Sintra?
This trip is rated moderate. Most coastal locations are easily accessible. Sintra is the exception — the palaces and gardens are built on a mountainside, so expect hills, steps, and some uneven paths. You don't need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable on your feet for a few hours. If you have concerns, mention it when you enquire.
I'm travelling alone — will that be a problem?
Not at all. The majority of participants on every trip book solo. You'll be paired with a same-gender roommate. The small group size — five photographers in a van, chasing light down the Portuguese coast — creates a relaxed, collaborative dynamic that past participants consistently rave about.
What's the weather like in October?
October is one of Portugal's best photography months. The summer crowds have gone, the light is softer and more golden, and temperatures are comfortable — typically 18–24°C. The Atlantic can bring occasional squalls, but these often produce the most dramatic skies. We work with whatever the coast gives us.
How do I secure my place and what are the payment terms?
A €350 deposit holds your place immediately via Stripe (Apple Pay & Google Pay accepted). The remaining balance is due 8 weeks before departure. With only 5 spots, this trip fills quickly — October is Portugal's golden month for photography.
