🚀 2028 Scouting Expedition
This is a professionally organised scouting departure. The key regions, wildlife habitats and landscape subjects are researched in advance, but approximately 30% of the expedition remains responsive to mist, monsoon weather, wildlife reports, light, group energy and discoveries on the ground. The aim is not to complete a Sri Lanka highlights checklist. It is to build an extraordinary small-group photographic adventure around the places that genuinely earn their time.

"I am a landscape photographer at heart, and Sri Lanka gives us the chance to combine misty tea country, mountain layers, huge waterfalls and changing monsoon atmosphere with genuinely wild wildlife photography. I want us to work hard for the photograph when it is worth it, accept a long road day when the destination earns it, and keep the group small enough that we can change direction when weather or wildlife gives us something better. This is not a luxury tour with cameras attached — the money goes into the photography, the people who help us access it and the time to do it properly."

Wildlife in real habitat
Multiple Wilpattu sessions with experienced naturalists, two photography-friendly jeeps and leopard as an objective rather than a promise — plus elephants, birds, sloth bear possibility and environmental wildlife.
Misty highlands
Tea geometry, reservoir landscapes, mountain layers, low cloud, wet forests and responsive dawns around Hatton, Maskeliya and Haputale.
Waterfalls & intimate landscape
Bambarakanda, the wider Kalupahana waterfall belt, cloud forest and smaller highland subjects used responsively when rain and mist make grand views disappear.
Water, elephants & Gal Oya
Reservoir landscape, birds and wild elephant opportunity from the Gal Oya ecosystem — a deliberately different wildlife chapter from Wilpattu rather than another conventional safari.

Aug 18
Arrival → Wilpattu
Private transfer into the dry zone, check-in, equipment reset and a deliberately gentle beginning. Nothing photographically essential is scheduled against international-flight fatigue.
2–3
Aug 19–20
Wilpattu — dedicated wildlife photography
Two private jeeps, maximum three photographers per vehicle, experienced naturalists and repeated time in excellent wild habitat. Leopard is an important objective but never guaranteed; behaviour and animal welfare dictate the encounter.

Aug 21
Responsive Wilpattu
Wildlife intelligence, conditions and group energy determine the final safari day. We may pursue strong activity, work the villus and birdlife, or protect an afternoon recovery if the previous sessions have been demanding.

Aug 22
Wilpattu → Hatton / Maskeliya
A genuine long road day — accepted because the photographic payoff is a completely different world. We move from dry-zone wildlife into wet mountain tea country, then stop. Sunset is optional only if the light truly earns it.

Aug 23
Reservoir mist, mountain layers & tea
Predawn landscape photography around the deeper Hatton / Maskeliya country, followed by a long breakfast and midday recovery. Afternoon options respond to cloud, waterfalls, tea-estate life or late light.

Aug 24
Waterfalls & working tea country
St Clair's, Devon, Laxapana or another locally stronger option depending water, mist and light. Respectful tea-estate and working-landscape photography is included where scouting establishes genuine access.

Aug 25
Hatton → Haputale — railway photography
Provisionally, photographers travel light by train while the road vehicle moves luggage separately. Small stations, passengers, tea country and wet railway atmosphere turn a base change into a travel-photography session. If the railway fails the scouting test, we simply drive.

Haputale escarpment & tea
One of the expedition's signature landscape mornings: huge elevation changes, tea-covered slopes, drifting mist and broken light. The exact position is chosen for conditions rather than because it appears on a tourist checklist.

Aug 27
Kalupahana & waterfall country
Bambarakanda and surrounding landscape become a weather-responsive library rather than a waterfall checklist. Overnight rain, water flow, cloud and visibility decide whether we work grand falls, forest or intimate landscape.

Horton Plains / best-conditions highlands
Cloud forest, montane grassland and intimate landscape, with the standard circuit providing the expedition's main moderate hike. If weather makes another highland subject substantially stronger, the 70 / 30 philosophy wins. Afternoon recovery is protected.

Haputale → Gal Oya
Descend from cool tea country into lowland wilderness. This is a purposeful transfer rather than a sightseeing day; after arrival we meet the local naturalists and choose between a gentle session, bird walk or pool.

Gal Oya — reservoir wildlife
Early boat-based exploration for environmental wildlife, elephants if nature cooperates, crocodiles, birds, islands, reflections and forest-covered hills. No "swimming elephant" promise — the ecosystem itself must be worth the morning.

Responsive Gal Oya
A second wildlife / landscape day determined with the naturalists after what we learn on the first. Boat, short jeep, birds, walking or a quieter recovery period can all be the correct answer.

Sep 1
Final Gal Oya morning & expedition split
One final conditions-led session and brunch bring the main expedition to a proper photographic close. Core-only guests begin the westbound airport journey; coastal-extension guests continue northeast toward Trincomalee.

Cultural Triangle Photography Extension — 3 nights / 4 days
A compact photography-rich prelude focused on ancient architecture, archaeology and cultural landscape rather than expanding the main expedition into a conventional Sri Lanka highlights tour.

Temples, rural landscape and respectful cultural photography

No staged "authentic" performances built for photographers
Target price: approximately €1,495 per person, twin-share, at 2+ participants. A transparent one-person operating rate may apply if only one photographer books; if a second later joins, the first participant automatically receives the lower 2+ rate.
Post-extension · September 1–5, 2028 · provisional
Trincomalee Coast & Ocean Photography Extension — 4 nights / 5 days
A deliberately softer ending to the expedition: serious seascape opportunities when the light is good, but every photographic session is optional. The point is to finish with cameras, warm water and enough time to recover.

70% researched structure
The four bases, wildlife operations, major landscape opportunities and recovery points are planned in advance. We know why a location earns its nights before the group arrives.
30% responsive freedom
Mist, rain, wildlife intelligence, water flow, light and group energy can alter individual sessions. Flexibility is one of the expedition's core photographic tools.
Long drives are allowed to earn their place
We do not add filler hotels simply to make the route look easy. A long road day is acceptable when it buys several nights in a substantially stronger photographic environment.
Adventure without unnecessary exhaustion
Recovery afternoons are protected after demanding sequences. An exceptional late-night session may replace the following dawn rather than stacking sleep debt for the sake of a timetable.

Questions
Before you register interest
Do I need to book either extension?
No. The 15-day main expedition is designed to begin and end as a complete product. The Cultural Triangle and Trincomalee coast are separate modules with their own photography, pacing and pricing.
What if only one person books an extension?
The aim is to keep extensions viable with one participant where the economics remain responsible. A higher one-person rate may apply because vehicle, guiding and leader costs are shared by fewer people. If a second participant later joins, the first participant automatically receives the lower 2+ rate. Where mutually comfortable, twin-sharing with Neil may reduce the solo-extension cost.
Are leopard sightings guaranteed?
No. We spend repeated sessions in excellent wild leopard habitat with experienced naturalists and work hard to create opportunity, but wildlife decides what happens. No baiting, feeding, staged animals or guaranteed species are part of this expedition.
Why Wilpattu instead of automatically using Yala?
The current route prioritises repeated time in strong leopard habitat while also considering the quality of the wildlife encounter, habitat, congestion and guide behaviour. Yala remains part of the scouting comparison before the commercial route is finally locked; the objective is not ideological purity, but the best balance of sighting opportunity and encounter quality for photographers.
Why isn't Ella a main base?
Because famous does not automatically mean photographically essential. The current highland architecture gives more time to Hatton / Maskeliya and Haputale / Kalupahana for mountain layers, tea, mist, waterfalls and working landscapes. Nine Arch Bridge is not a workshop objective.
What does scouting expedition mean?
The route, key subjects and operational framework are researched in depth before departure, but this is the first edition and some exact viewpoints, timings, accommodation choices and alternatives are being tested on the ground. Participants should expect professional organisation with genuine exploratory freedom rather than a rigid polished-tour script.
