I want to share an extraordinary experience I recently had in Granada, Spain, during my 20th year anniversary trip with Orla. 20 years… wow! Never a dull moment.

Admiring the Alhambra: A Missed Opportunity Inside, But a Spectacular View Outside
We arrived in Granada, full of excitement, especially with the Alhambra right outside our hotel window. Unfortunately, we didn't book tickets in advance to tour the inside of this iconic landmark. The Alhambra is so popular that you need to plan well ahead to secure a spot. But we weren't too disappointed because the view from the outside was stunning enough to satisfy our curiosity and admiration. The real challenge, though, was to capture the Alhambra in its full glory during the blue hour.

The Blue Hour: Overcoming Overcast Skies for Stunning Photography
The weather, however, had other plans for us. The sky was overcast, dashing our hopes for a picturesque sunset. But as every seasoned photographer knows, sometimes unexpected conditions can lead to surprisingly beautiful outcomes. The overcast sky promised a potential blue hour shot, where the Alhambra, beautifully lit against a moody sky, would stand out even more dramatically. With this in mind, we quickly packed our gear and headed out, determined to find the perfect vantage point.

Hiking to the Perfect Vantage Point in Granada
Our first stop was one of the popular viewpoints, known as a mirador, which offers a stunning view of the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada mountains in the background. Normally, these mountains are snow-capped, adding a picturesque element to the scene. But as luck would have it, the rain had melted all the snow, leaving us with a rather dull backdrop. Undeterred, we decided to hike further uphill to another viewpoint, hoping to find a better composition.

Capturing the Alhambra: A Tribute to Patience and Perseverance
The trek was challenging, especially with the rain beginning to fall more steadily. But once we reached the top, the view was well worth the effort. From this vantage point, we could see the Alhambra with the Sierra Nevada mountains behind it, now dark and imposing, serving as a perfect silhouette to enhance the composition. The rain added a mysterious, ethereal quality to the scene, giving the photograph a unique mood that a clear day could never have offered.
Mastering the Art of Composition: Balancing Light and Shadow
Setting up our equipment, we settled in to wait for the blue hour to begin. The rain was relentless, but it only added to the atmosphere, making the Alhambra appear even more majestic against the darkening sky. I couldn't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for Orla, who was holding the camera and braving the rain with me. Celebrating our 20th anniversary by capturing this moment together felt incredibly special. It was a testament to our partnership, both in life and in this creative endeavor.
For this shot, a sturdy tripod was absolutely essential. The rain and low light made handheld shooting impossible. I also used a 10-stop ND filter to smooth the sky and clouds during the earlier shots.

As the blue hour approached, the Alhambra's lights began to illuminate the structure, creating a striking contrast with the deepening blue of the sky. The composition I had in mind was coming to life, with the Alhambra glowing against the dark mountains and the moody sky. It was a moment of pure satisfaction, knowing that despite the challenging conditions, we were able to capture something truly remarkable.

Reflecting on the Experience: The Beauty of Unpredictable Weather
To ensure that I captured the perfect balance between the ambient light and the artificial illumination of the Alhambra, I took multiple exposures, ranging from long to short. This approach allowed me to have more control during post-processing, where I could blend different exposures to achieve the desired effect. In the end, I combined a darker sky with a slightly brighter foreground, which brought out the best elements of the scene.
Final Thoughts: The Alhambra as a Symbol of Love and Photography
Looking back, I'm incredibly pleased with how the image turned out. The rain, which initially seemed like an obstacle, ended up being a blessing, adding a unique atmosphere that made this photograph stand out from the usual Alhambra shots. It was a reminder that sometimes, pushing through challenging conditions can lead to unexpectedly beautiful results.
As the rain intensified, we decided to call it a day. We were soaked but elated, knowing that we had captured something special. The Alhambra, with its rich history and stunning architecture, had been immortalised in a way that felt personal and meaningful. It was the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary, combining our love for each other with our passion for creativity.
