Rediscovering the Algarve — a photographer's paradise
When I first returned to the Algarve after what felt like ages, I was immediately struck by its beauty. The vibrant coastline, the timeless allure of its sea stacks, and the dramatic sunsets always make it a place I hold dear. As I stood there, gazing at the horizon, I felt a deep sense of excitement and anticipation to capture the essence of this stunning location through my camera lens. This time, my goal was to explore the art of long-exposure photography — a technique that transforms the restless ocean into a dreamy, almost ethereal landscape. Armed with my camera, a tripod, and a collection of filters, I dove into the challenge.
Exploring "The Letters": A Hidden Gem of the Algarve
One of my favourite locations in the Algarve is what I affectionately call "The Letters." I've visited this spot many times, but every visit feels fresh, offering new perspectives and compositions. As the sun began its descent, painting the cliffs and water with golden light, I carefully selected my first composition. Setting up the tripod on precarious ground, I was reminded of an important lesson: always mind your footing when photographing near cliffs. The thrill of capturing a perfect shot is not worth risking safety. Once everything was secure, I pressed the shutter and watched the magic unfold.
Capturing the Perfect Long Exposure: The Beauty of Sea Stacks
The first image turned out beautifully, showcasing the serene flow of water and the steadfast presence of the sea stacks that the Algarve is so famous for. Long exposure photography, I've learned, excels in harsher lighting conditions, where slowing down the motion creates a sense of artistry and calm. One particularly memorable moment involved improvisation. Without a proper filter system, I resorted to holding a filter in front of the lens while shooting. It was a comical yet effective solution, requiring precision and a steady hand. After several attempts, I achieved a beautiful abstract shot that blended the sharpness of the rocks with the soft motion of the water. This unorthodox approach reminded me that sometimes creativity and adaptability are as important as technical skill.
