Neil's take
From Neil
"After living in the Algarve, I've discovered that its true soul lies in the quiet ritual of the Atlantic. This 7-day journey is designed to take you beyond the postcards and into the raw, unvarnished beauty of the Costa Vicentina and the Alentejo. Based in Sagres, we'll immerse ourselves in this wild coastline's rhythms — and when night falls, we'll train our lenses upward into one of Europe's last Bortle 3 dark sky zones. For those who want more, I've added a pre-trip Lisbon add-on — we'll shoot the city, then take the train south together."
About this trip
7 days. One base. The quiet ritual of the Atlantic.
Based in Sagres, we'll immerse ourselves in this wild coastline's rhythms, chasing light from dawn's first glow on Ponta da Piedade's sea caves to the moment twilight sets the cliffs of Praia da Cordoama aflame. Here, every cove tells a story, and our single-base approach lets us pivot with the winds to find the day's most luminous scenes. No packing and unpacking — just seven days of focused, unhurried photography.
When night falls and skies clear, we'll train our lenses upward — this is one of Europe's last Bortle 3 zones, where the Milky Way arcs over deserted beaches like a celestial bridge. You'll leave not just with striking images, but with the instincts to chase light and tell powerful stories wherever your lens takes you next.

Itinerary
How the 7 days unfold
1
Day
Arrival Lagos — pick up the van & first sunset
Meet in Lagos. Pick up our vehicle and settle into our Sagres base. Afternoon orientation and gear check, then straight out for our first sunset session along the cliffs. Evening welcome dinner.
2–3
Days
Ponta da Piedade & Lagos sea caves
Two days exploring the golden coastline east of Sagres. Dawn at Ponta da Piedade's sea stacks and grottos — the light here is extraordinary. Benagil Sea Cave, Alvor's tidal patterns at low tide, and the hidden coves between. Optional evening editing sessions back at base.
4–5
Days
Sagres & Cape St. Vincent — the wild west
We turn west to the raw, windswept headlands of the Costa Vicentina. Cape St. Vincent — Europe's southwesternmost point — at sunrise and sunset. The fortress cliffs, the lighthouse, and the endless Atlantic horizon. These are the days for big-sky seascapes and the drama of untamed coast.
6
Day
Secret beaches — Cordoama & Barranco
North along the Vicentina coast to the vast, empty beaches of Praia da Cordoama and Barranco. These are local-knowledge spots — wide sands, dramatic cliffs, and very few people. Sunset here is extraordinary. If skies are clear, we stay out for our Milky Way session — the galactic core rising over the Atlantic.
7
Day
Final dawn & departure
One last sunrise session — a final chance to apply everything you've learned. Group breakfast and optional portfolio review. Transfer back to Lagos or Faro for outbound flights. You leave with a body of work that captures the quiet ritual of the Atlantic.
Optional add-on
Start your journey in the capital
Pre-expedition extension
Lisbon: Street & Light — 3 Nights · €1,000
+
Fly into Lisbon early and spend three days in Portugal's mesmerising capital. Alfama's narrow lanes at dawn, the Belém Tower at golden hour, the geometric trams climbing the hills, and the rooftop miradouros overlooking the Tagus. City centre hotel, every session Neil-led. Then we take the train south together to Lagos to meet the group and pick up the van.
3 nights city centre hotel (twin share)

Train to Lagos with Neil — seamless connection to Day 1
The Lisbon add-on runs for 3 nights immediately before the main expedition. You'll take the train from Lisbon to Lagos together on the morning of Day 1. Mention Lisbon when you enquire and Neil will provide full details.
The rhythm of the trip
What a typical day feels like
First light
We're on the cliffs before dawn. The Algarve's east-facing coves catch the first light beautifully — golden limestone, turquoise water, and the sound of the Atlantic below. Neil has already scouted the spot. You arrive, set up, and shoot.
Midday is yours
After the morning session, we eat well — fresh seafood, pastéis de nata, strong Portuguese coffee. The middle of the day is deliberately unscheduled. Swim, edit if you want to, nap, or wander the old town of Sagres. Neil is around if you want to talk images.
The second session
Late afternoon we head back out for sunset and twilight. The Algarve's west-facing cliffs ignite in golden and amber light. We shoot until the colour drains from the sky — and on clear nights, we stay out for the stars.
Evenings
Dinner together at a local tasca or back at base. Some nights we review images as a group if people have the energy. Other nights — especially if the Milky Way is out — we're back on the cliffs under a sky full of stars. No pressure either way.

From a past participant · Algarve Workshop
★★★★★
“Neil has a calmness about his photography which filtered through to everyone around him. I tend to get excited by what's in front of me and want to take a million shots, but Neil's demeanor and focus cooled me down and allowed me to take some of my favourite images ever. His knowledge of the area was superb and when one location wasn't working, he knew of 2 or 3 others that could work better, and they often did.”

Questions
Things people ask before they book
What does "single base" mean and why is it a good thing?
We stay in one accommodation in Sagres for the entire week. No packing and unpacking, no checking in and out. This means more time shooting, less time on logistics. It also lets us be completely flexible — if the light is better on the west coast than the east, we simply drive 20 minutes instead of relocating. It's a more relaxed, more focused way to work.
What camera gear do I need for seascapes and astro?
A wide-angle lens (16–35mm equivalent) for seascapes and the Milky Way, and a short telephoto (70–200mm) for compressing cliffs and isolating details. A sturdy tripod is essential for long exposures and astrophotography. If you have a fast wide-angle lens (f/2.8 or wider) for the night sky, bring it — but don't buy one specially. A full kit list is sent after booking.
Tell me about the Lisbon add-on.
The Lisbon add-on is a 3-night pre-expedition extension in Portugal's capital. Neil leads every session — Alfama's narrow lanes and trams at dawn, Belém Tower at golden hour, the rooftop miradouros for sunset, and street photography at LX Factory. You'll stay in a city centre hotel, then take the train south to Lagos together on Day 1 to meet the group and pick up the van. The cost is €1,000 per person (twin share). Mention it when you enquire.
Are editing sessions mandatory?
Not at all. All editing and review sessions are optional. We know how tiring long shooting days can be — if you'd rather rest during downtime, that's completely fine. Neil makes himself available during midday breaks and occasional evenings for those who want feedback on their images. No pressure, ever.
Will we definitely photograph the Milky Way?
September is a good month for the Milky Way in the Algarve — the galactic core is visible in the southern sky after sunset. That said, astrophotography is always weather-dependent. We'll go out whenever skies are clear. If conditions don't cooperate, we pivot to twilight long-exposures and light-painting on the cliffs — equally atmospheric, just different.
I'm travelling alone — will that be a problem?
Not at all. The majority of participants on every trip book solo. You'll be paired with a same-gender roommate. The single-base format and small group size (max 6) creates a particularly close, relaxed dynamic — past participants often stay in touch long after the workshop ends.
How do I secure my place and what are the payment terms?
A €250 deposit holds your place immediately via Stripe (Apple Pay & Google Pay accepted). The remaining balance is due 8 weeks before departure. With only 6 spots and a September date, this trip fills quickly — September is Portugal's golden month for light.
