Golden hour, blue hour, spring flowers, and the magic of the Andalusian light
Oh my God, we've landed here in the most rushed state we've ever experienced. But wow, did we get treated to some absolutely breathtaking light over these majestic mountains. I really hope I managed to capture their magnificence, despite the frantic scramble. Here's hoping the rest of our journey is a bit more serene.
We start our adventure in Zahara de la Sierra. Our initial plan was to stay just for sunrise, but the sheer beauty of this place has captivated us. We're now aiming to capture the ethereal blue hour, where the village reveals its mystical charm. For now, I'm fine-tuning a composition that I believe will encapsulate the essence of this magical place.
The Golden Hour That Almost Got Away
On our first night, the universe conspired to present us with the most glorious light. We randomly pulled into this car park, and in an instant, we were in panic mode, rushing to find the perfect compositions. The mighty mountain stood tall, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun. It was a quick scramble to set up the tripod for a long exposure, adding a dynamic element to the scene.

Just when I thought the light had faded, a deep red glow crept up the mountain, and I was ecstatic. I found a beautiful tree to use as a foreground anchor, capturing this extraordinary moment. The experience was fantastic, and the images turned out beyond my wildest expectations.

Blue Hour Photography at Zahara de la Sierra
This village has surpassed any expectations I had. The street lights illuminating the cliff face and the castle atop the cliffs are breathtaking. My goal was to blend images, capturing the serene blue hour and the artificial light illuminating the cliffs. The final image, which I hope you'll enjoy, is a testament to the delicate balance between natural and artificial light.

I also used a 10-stop ND filter to slow down and capture the dramatic movement in the clouds, enhancing the overall composition. This setting brought back memories of the travel photography that first ignited my passion for this art form.
Tips for Finding the Perfect Composition
I'm thrilled with how this blue hour shot of the town turned out. It's exactly how I envisioned it when I first discovered this location on Google Maps. Balancing artificial and ambient light during blue hour is crucial, and this frame captures that balance perfectly. This image is a reminder of my days as a travel photographer, capturing scenes that look like they belong on a postcard. The beautiful subject matter made it all worthwhile.
The Beauty of Photographing Morning Light
After a night of intense photography, we planned to return for the sunrise. There's a vast reservoir here, and we hoped to capture reflections of the town in the water. Unfortunately, the water level was low, and the wind caused ripples, preventing the reflections we sought. Despite this, I took some long exposure shots to smooth out the water.

This is very photoshopped. I only add it to show what I would have liked to photograph. Such is the way of things.
On the way down, we noticed a patch of purple flowers that could serve as stunning foreground elements when the sun rises. Hopefully, we can conjure some magic with this scene.
The Morning Light and the Flowers
This morning, while waiting for the sun to rise, I found a small plant thriving in the harsh environment, making for a captivating photographic subject.
It's crucial to look down, as fascinating subjects can be found right at your feet. This lone flower standing out in the rugged landscape made for a beautiful, intimate scene.

Surrounded by vibrant flowers, I realised the importance of finding compositions before setting up the tripod. Height plays a significant role in framing the image. I wanted to use the foreground of flowers to lead the eye to the picturesque town in the background. Exploring different compositions hand-held proved invaluable.
Finally, the morning light crept across the landscape, making the flowers and the entire scene sing. Capturing this stillness, so different from the raw energy of the ocean I often photograph, was a profound experience. The vibrant colours of the flowers against the backdrop of the village were stunning. Although my focus stacking abilities could use improvement, I'm thrilled with how this photograph turned out. It captures the essence of being amidst the flowers, leading to the picturesque town bathed in golden light.
Waiting for the Perfect Light
Waiting for the perfect light is part of the joy of landscape photography. The light started to creep across the landscape, creating an absolutely gorgeous scene. Standing there, watching the dawn evolve was magical. The whole scene bathed in light added depth and contrast to the frame, making for a beautiful photograph.
