Neil's take
From Neil
"Botswana is the most untouched wildlife destination I've visited. This 13-day journey is a pure wildlife photography intensive — from the dust-choked plains of Savuti to the silent waterways of the Okavango Delta. And for those who want to extend the adventure, I've added an optional post-expedition add-on into Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park — one of Africa's finest elephant strongholds."

13 days. Predators, waterways, and the Analog Ritual.
Our expedition moves from the thunder of Victoria Falls into the heart of the wild. We live in private mobile camps, allowing us to be the first on the trails at dawn. In Chobe and Savuti, we track the legendary elephant herds and the big cats — lion, leopard, and cheetah — that follow them. We will master the physics of light, learning how to expose for the high-contrast textures of African wildlife under a harsh sun or the soft, painterly hues of twilight.
In the Okavango Delta, the photography shifts. We trade our 4x4s for Mokoros — traditional dugout canoes. Gliding through the reeds offers a silent, low-angle perspective that is a dream for birdlife and aquatic wildlife photography. It's an intimate, unvarnished look at the wild that requires us to slow down and truly see the geometry of the landscape and its inhabitants.
What you'll master
Four skills this expedition will sharpen
The physics of light
Mastering exposure for high-contrast wildlife — from harsh midday dust to the soft, painterly hues of African twilight
Action & predator photography
Tracking and capturing big cats in Savuti — anticipation, autofocus mastery, and the burst-mode instinct
Silent perspective
Low-angle techniques from a Mokoro canoe — an intimate, water-level view of the Delta's birdlife and aquatic wildlife
The Analog Ritual
Patience, presence, and learning to anticipate wild moments before they unfold. Optional image reviews during downtime
Itinerary
How the 13 days unfold
1–2
Days
Arrival Victoria Falls — long-exposure mastery
Touch down at VFA. Settle into our lodge. Two days photographing the smoke that thunders — Victoria Falls at its most powerful. Long-exposure techniques on the mighty Zambezi, sunset cruise for river wildlife, and our first group sessions on the physics of light and exposure.
3–7
Days
Chobe & Savuti — the predator heartland
Cross into Botswana. Five days in the legendary big cat country of Chobe and Savuti. Private mobile camp means we're first on the trails at dawn. Elephant herds, lion prides, and — if the bush gods smile — the elusive leopard. Two photographers per row in our specialised safari vehicles ensures clear sightlines. Optional evening debriefs around the campfire.
8–12
Days
Okavango Delta — the silent perspective
Domestic flight from Maun to Kasane, then into the Delta. We trade 4x4s for Mokoros — traditional dugout canoes. Five days of water-level photography: birdlife, aquatic wildlife, and the geometry of reeds and water lilies. This is where the Analog Ritual deepens — silent, patient, intimate. Optional group portfolio review.
13
Day
Departure — Maun
Final dawn session in the Delta. Transfer to Maun for outbound flights — or continue to Hwange for the post-expedition add-on. You leave with a portfolio of wildlife images that capture the raw, untamed soul of Botswana.

The rhythm of the trip
What a typical day on safari feels like
First light
We're in the vehicle before dawn — coffee in hand, cameras ready. The African bush wakes quickly: the first light ignites the dust, and the predators are most active in the cool morning hours. Our guides track fresh spoor from the night before.
Midday — rest and review
Back at camp or the lodge by late morning. Brunch, then the heat of the day is for rest, optional image review, and one-on-one feedback with Neil if you want it. The animals rest too — this is when you download cards, back up, and prepare for the afternoon session.
The second session
We head out again as the heat breaks — around 3:30 PM. The golden hour in Botswana is extraordinary: dust-filled air, long shadows, and the soft, painterly light that makes African wildlife photography legendary. We stay out until dusk, often tracking predators as they begin their evening hunt.
Evenings
Dinner under the stars — either at the lodge or around the campfire at our mobile camp. Some nights we debrief as a group if people have the energy. Others, we simply listen to the sounds of the bush and rest for the next dawn. No pressure either way.

★★★★★
“I had the pleasure of joining Neil on a journey through Botswana, and it was an unforgettable experience. Neil was an outstanding tour leader — generous with his technical knowledge and experience, while always making sure the trip was relaxed, enjoyable, and memorable for everyone involved. Everything ran seamlessly from start to finish. I wouldn't hesitate to join another tour with Neil and highly recommend him to anyone seeking an incredible photographic adventure.”
You know your camera — aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and autofocus modes
You want to photograph big cats and elephants in one of Africa's last great wildernesses
You're comfortable with early starts and long days in the bush — the animals don't wait
You're happy with a mix of lodge and mobile camp accommodation
You want to learn the rhythm of wildlife photography — patience, anticipation, and the Analog Ritual
This expedition isn't for you if…
You've never shot in manual mode — this is a wildlife intensive, not a beginner course
You need guaranteed luxury — mobile camps are comfortable but rugged
You're not comfortable with heat, dust, and insects — this is the African bush
You prefer a fixed itinerary — wildlife doesn't follow a schedule and neither do we
Questions
Things people ask before they book
Who leads the workshop and who handles guiding?
Neil leads all photography sessions and technical tuition. For the wilderness segments, we partner with Kalahari Tours, utilising their expert local guides and trackers for wildlife safety and logistics.
What experience level do I need?
Open to all levels, but wildlife photography requires quick technical adjustments. A basic familiarity with your camera's autofocus and burst modes will be highly beneficial. If you can shoot in manual mode and track a moving subject, you're ready.
How many people are in the group?
To ensure every photographer has a clear, unobstructed line of sight from the vehicle, the group is strictly limited to 6 participants (maximum 2 per row).
Tell me about the Hwange add-on.
The Hwange add-on is a 4-night post-expedition extension in Zimbabwe's largest national park. You'll spend 2 nights at Robins Camp in the remote north, then 2 nights at Hwange Main Camp with its famous floodlit waterhole. Neil drives the rental vehicle from Livingstone and leads daily sunrise and sunset game drives. The cost is €1,500 per person (twin share). Mention it when you enquire.
Are editing sessions mandatory?
Not at all. All editing and review sessions are optional. Safari days are long and tiring — if you'd rather rest during downtime, that's completely fine. Neil makes himself available during midday breaks and occasional evenings for those who want feedback on their images. No pressure, ever.
What is the fitness level required?
Low to Moderate. Apart from walking tours at Victoria Falls, most of our time is spent in specialised safari trucks. This workshop is focused on vehicle-based observation and photography. You should be comfortable getting in and out of vehicles and walking short distances on uneven terrain.
Can I fly a drone?
Drones are strictly prohibited. Botswana has a zero-tolerance policy for drones in National Parks and wildlife reserves to protect the environment and ensure animal welfare. Please do not bring one.
How do bookings and deposits work?
A €1,200 non-refundable deposit secures your place. The final balance is due 90 days before departure. Comprehensive travel insurance and a signed liability waiver are mandatory. Cancellation terms are provided with your booking confirmation.
