About this trip
13 days. South to north. The long way through the desert.
We start south of Windhoek and drive the long way north — a journey that takes us from the ancient Quiver Tree Forest through the ghostly sands of Kolmanskop, into the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, and finally to the remote wilderness of the Skeleton Coast. By partnering with GoGravel Photosafaris, we gain specialised 4x4 access to the northern coast — a No-Man's-Land of shipwrecks and massive dunes that few photographers ever reach.
Expect to find yourself standing in total silence as the sun crests over the world's highest dunes, painting the sand in shades of burning apricot and deep shadow. We hunt for the atmospheric — the way the Atlantic mist softens the light on a rusted hull, or capturing the geometry of the desert from above with a private doors-off helicopter flight. We spend our nights under some of the darkest skies on Earth and our days exploring the rugged, beautiful desolation of one of the world's last true wildernesses.

How the 13 days unfold
1
Day
Arrival Windhoek — south to the Quiver Tree Forest
Airport pickup at WDH. We drive south into the ancient landscape of the Quiver Tree Forest. Settle into our lodge. First evening orientation and silhouette session — the distinctive trees against a blazing African sunset. After dark, our first astrophotography session under some of the clearest skies on Earth.

Day
Quiver Tree Forest — dark sky mastery
A full day among the ancient quiver trees. Dawn silhouettes, midday detail work on the bark and branching patterns, and a second night of astrophotography — stacking techniques, star trails, and the Milky Way arcing through the branches.
3–4
Days
Kolmanskop — private ghost town session
Continue south to the abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop. Private access means we shoot the sand-filled rooms and crumbling architecture without other photographers in frame. Two days exploring the textures of decay — peeling wallpaper, rusted metal, and dunes reclaiming doorways. Evening astrophotography over the ghost town.

Days
Sossusvlei & Deadvlei — exclusive dawn access
Four days inside the national park. We're on the dunes before first light — exclusive access means we shoot the world's highest sand dunes without crowds. Deadvlei's ancient camel thorn trees at dawn, the abstract curves of the sand sea, and a private doors-off helicopter flight to capture the geometry from above. Optional editing sessions at the lodge.

Days
The Skeleton Coast — GoGravel expedition
Four days pushing north in partnership with GoGravel Photosafaris. Specialised 4x4 access to the remote northern Skeleton Coast — a wilderness of shipwrecks, massive dune fields, seal colonies, and fog-drenched beaches. This is the Namibia few photographers ever reach. The raw, untamed Atlantic coast at its most dramatic.

Departure — Windhoek
Final morning on the coast. Transfer back to Windhoek for outbound flights — or continue to Etosha for the post-expedition wildlife add-on. You leave with a body of work that captures the ancient silence of the world's oldest desert.

Begin your journey in Cape Town — one of the world's most photogenic cities. Three days of dawn seascapes, mountain viewpoints, and the wild Cape Peninsula coastline. Post-expedition extension
Etosha Wildlife Safari — 3 Nights · €1,500
After the main expedition ends in Windhoek, continue north to Etosha National Park — one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations. Based at Okaukuejo Resort, famous for its floodlit waterhole where elephants, rhinos, and lions gather after dark. Neil provides a full pre-trip briefing and location guide so you know exactly where to be and when.

The rhythm of the trip
What a typical day in the desert feels like
First light
We're on the dunes before dawn — the Namibian desert at first light is one of the great experiences in photography. The sand shifts from cool grey to burning orange in minutes. Neil has already scouted the best vantage point. You arrive, set up, and catch the transition.
Midday — retreat from the heat
Back at the lodge or camp by late morning. Brunch, then the heat of the day is for rest, optional image review, and one-on-one feedback with Neil if you want it. The desert light is too harsh for shooting — this is when you download cards, back up, and prepare for the afternoon.
The second session
We head out as the heat softens — around 4 PM. The late afternoon light in Namibia is extraordinary: long shadows, warm tones, and the dunes take on a three-dimensional quality. We shoot until the last colour drains from the sky. On clear nights, we stay out for astrophotography.
Evenings
Dinner under the stars — the Milky Way arcing overhead. Some nights we review images as a group if people have the energy. Others, we simply sit in the silence of the desert and rest. Tomorrow's dawn comes early, and the dunes won't photograph themselves.

Things people ask before they book
Who leads the workshop and who handles the driving?
Neil leads all photography tuition and sessions. For the technically demanding Skeleton Coast and Kaokoveld segments, we partner with the expert team at GoGravel to provide specialised 4x4 support and local navigation.
What experience level do I need?
Open to all levels. Namibia's landscapes are perfect for mastering scale, while the Skeleton Coast offers unique opportunities for atmospheric and abstract photography. If you can shoot in manual mode, you're ready.
How many people are in the group?
To ensure everyone has a dedicated window seat and personalised tuition in the field, we keep our group strictly limited to 5 participants.
Tell me about the Cape Town add-on.
The Cape Town add-on is a 3-night pre-expedition extension based at the StayEasy Cape Town City Bowl. Neil leads daily sunrise and sunset sessions covering Table Mountain, Lion's Head, Boulder's Beach penguins, Chapman's Peak Drive, and a Kalk Bay sunrise whale-watching trip. The cost is €1,500 per person (twin share). You'll fly from Cape Town to Windhoek to join the main expedition on Day 1.
Tell me about the Etosha add-on.
The Etosha add-on is a 3-night post-expedition extension at Okaukuejo Resort inside Etosha National Park. You'll do daily sunrise and sunset game drives and photograph at the famous floodlit waterhole after dark. Neil provides a pre-trip briefing and location guide. The cost is €1,500 per person (twin share). Mention it when you enquire and Neil will send full details.
Are editing sessions mandatory?
Not at all. All editing and review sessions are optional. Desert days are long and physically demanding — if you'd rather rest during downtime, that's completely fine. Neil makes himself available during midday breaks and occasional evenings for those who want feedback on their images. No pressure, ever.
How do we get around?
We travel in heavy-duty, customised 4x4 vehicles. For the Skeleton Coast, these are specifically equipped for extreme sand driving and remote desert survival.
What about dust and gear safety?
Namibia is notoriously dusty. We recommend bringing a dedicated cleaning kit (blowers and cloths) and, if possible, two camera bodies to minimise lens changes in the field. A full gear guide is sent after booking.
What about insurance and medical cover?
Comprehensive travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation (Medevac) cover is mandatory due to the extreme remoteness of the Skeleton Coast region. Neil can recommend providers on request.
