"Japan was the trip that made me want to run workshops. The combination of ancient architecture, mountain forests, and November autumn colour is extraordinary — and the light quality that month is something I plan my entire year around. This route now includes an overnight Ryokan detour into Osaka, the preserved Edo streets of the Kiso Valley, and a Shinkansen finale through Kanazawa. For those who want more, I've added two optional extensions: a pre-trip drive into the cedar forests and waterfalls of Nikko, and a post-trip deep dive into Tokyo's hidden neighbourhoods. About this trip
13 days. Seven regions. Peak autumn colour.
Japan in November is extraordinary. The country's famous autumn colour peaks across temples, mountain passes and old post towns simultaneously — and if you know where to be and when, the photographs can be genuinely world-class.
This is a high-paced, high-reward trip with a carefully designed two-part structure. We begin with a van-based arc: Tokyo streets, the quiet shores of Lake Suwa, the Kiso Valley's preserved Edo-period post town at sunrise, the iconic Fuji basin, and a coastal bridge session in Shizuoka. Then we drop the van in Kyoto and switch to Japan's world-class rail network for the second arc: five nights in Kyoto with day excursions into Osaka and Nara, followed by an express train to Kanazawa and a Shinkansen bullet-train finale back to Tokyo. Neil drives the van leg, Neil scouts every location, and puts you in the right spot at the right time. You shoot.

How the 13 days unfold
1
Day
Arrival Tokyo — Shinjuku night session
Airport transfer via Limousine Bus or Narita Express. Group orientation and gear check, then dusk walk-and-shoot through Shinjuku and Omoide Yokocho.

Day
Tokyo to Lake Suwa — decompression & castle sunset
Pick up the 9-seater van in Shinjuku. Drive 2.5 hours via the Chuo Expressway to Lake Suwa. Rest and scout. Shoot Takashima Castle at sunset and twilight (~4:30 PM).

Day
Kiso Valley sunrise — Narai-juku Post Town
Pre-dawn departure from Suwa. Drive 1 hour into the Kiso Valley. Shoot Narai-juku's preserved Edo-period streets at blue hour (~5:45 AM). Post-shoot breakfast, then mountain transit to the Fuji basin (~1.5–2 hours).

Eve
Lake Kawaguchiko sunset — Oishi Park & Momiji Corridor
Arrive in the Fuji basin. Check into the private villa. Sunset shoot at the lakeshore (~4:15 PM).

Day
Fuji Five Lakes loop — full base day
Chureito Pagoda at sunrise (~5:45 AM). Oshino Hakkai for midday reflections. Iyashi no Sato thatched-roof village at sunset (~3:30 PM). All drives 5–15 minutes from the villa.

Fuji lakeshore sunrise — drive to Shizuoka coast
Lakeside shore at sunrise (~6:00 AM). Check out of the villa. Drive 1.5 hours south to coastal Shizuoka. Afternoon shoot at the Hourai Bridge in Shimada — leading lines and geometry at sunset (~3:30 PM).

Day
Shizuoka to Kyoto — van drop-off & Fushimi Inari
Relaxed breakfast. Drive 2 hours west to Kyoto. Drop off the van permanently at Kyoto Station. Walk 3 minutes to the hotel and unpack for the 5-night hub. Evening shoot at Fushimi Inari's upper mountain loops — dusk lanterns (~5:00 PM via local rail).

Day
Kyoto base day — Tofuku-ji sunrise & Higashiyama streets
Pre-booked MK Taxi to Tofuku-ji for the Tsutenkyo Bridge at first light (~5:45 AM) — arguably the single best autumn-colour shot in Kyoto. Afternoon at Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka, the preserved Higashiyama slopes, for late-afternoon street scenes and temple approaches.

Arashiyama sunrise — Osaka overnight Ryokan
Arashiyama Bamboo Grove at sunrise (~5:45 AM via early local train). Leave main luggage in Kyoto. Pack an overnight camera bag. 30-minute train to Osaka. Check into a traditional city-centre ryokan. Dotonbori Canal at dusk — neon long exposures (~4:30 PM).

Osaka Castle dawn — Nara sunset deer
Walk or taxi to Osaka Castle moat for dawn reflections (~5:45 AM). Breakfast at the ryokan, then 30-minute train back to your waiting Kyoto hotel room. Afternoon Kintetsu Limited Express to Nara (35 mins). Mt. Wakakusa slope at sunset with wild deer (~3:45 PM). Return to Kyoto for dinner.

Day
Kiyomizu-dera sunrise — Nara double-down
Kiyomizu-dera at sunrise (~6:00 AM) — the iconic wooden terrace in morning light with far fewer crowds than midday. Afternoon Kintetsu Limited Express back to Nara for the Nigatsu-do Temple balcony — elevated sunset and twilight valley views (~3:45 PM).

Golden Pavilion — Kanazawa twilight
Kinkaku-ji at opening (~8:45 AM). Check out of Kyoto hotel. JR Thunderbird Express to Kanazawa (2 hours). Check into SOKI KANAZAWA. Higashi Chaya geisha district at twilight (~4:15 PM). Group dinner at Tomikinton — world-class tonkatsu.

Kenroku-en garden — Shinkansen to Tokyo
Kenroku-en — one of Japan's three great gardens — at opening (~6:00 AM). Tsuzumi-mon Gate architecture at Kanazawa Station. Midday Hokuriku Shinkansen (Kagayaki Express) to Tokyo — on-train image reviews (2.5 hours). Check into Shinjuku hotel. Late-night Akihabara or Shibuya cyberpunk street session.

Day
Final portfolio review & departure
Group breakfast. Dedicated print and portfolio review session in a private hotel space. Midday group breaks camp — or continue to the Tokyo add-on. Direct Narita Express or Airport Limousine Bus from Shinjuku to international terminals.

Nikko: Cedar Forests & Waterfalls — 3 Nights · €1,500
Fly in early and head north. Neil picks you up in Tokyo and drives two hours into the mountains of Nikko — a UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient temples among towering cedars. This is the Japan of woodblock prints: vermilion bridges in the mist, waterfall long-exposures, and mountain lakes at dawn. A completely different rhythm to the main expedition — quieter, slower, deeply atmospheric.

Tokyo: The Deep Cuts — 3 Nights · €1,000
After the group farewell on Day 13, stay on in Tokyo. This is not the Day 1–2 highlights reel — this is the Tokyo Neil knows from years of wandering its backstreets. Yanaka cemetery at dawn, the vintage lanes of Shimokitazawa, Odaiba's futuristic skyline at blue hour, Tsukiji outer market, and a late-night Kabukicho neon session. City centre hotel, every session Neil-led.

The rhythm of the trip
What a typical day feels like
First light
We're in position before the sun. Some mornings that means a 4am departure — but Neil has already scouted the spot, checked the weather, and knows exactly where to stand. You arrive, set up, and shoot. No guesswork.
Midday is yours
After the morning session, we eat. Then the middle of the day is deliberately unscheduled. Sleep, walk, edit if you want to, or just sit somewhere with a coffee and take Japan in. Neil is around if you have questions, but this is your time to recharge.
The second session
Late afternoon we head back out for sunset and twilight — sometimes at the same location in completely different light, sometimes somewhere new. These sessions run into blue hour and often finish after dark.
Evenings
Dinner together — always somewhere Neil knows and trusts. Some nights we'll look at images as a group if people have the energy. Other nights it's just food, a drink, and bed. No pressure either way — editing is always optional.

Questions
Things people ask before they book
What camera gear do I need to bring?
Any interchangeable lens camera works — mirrorless or DSLR. A wide-angle (16–35mm equivalent) and a short telephoto (70–200mm equivalent) will cover every situation on this trip. A full detailed kit list is sent after booking. You do not need a full-frame camera or expensive gear. Neil has shot commercially on entry-level bodies. The lens matters more than the body.
I’m travelling alone — will that be a problem?
Not at all. The majority of participants on every trip book solo. You’ll be paired with a same-gender roommate unless you request a single supplement, which can be arranged for an additional cost after booking. Past participants consistently say the group dynamic is one of the best parts of the experience.
Tell me about the Nikko add-on.
The Nikko add-on is a 3-night pre-expedition extension in the mountains north of Tokyo. Neil drives from Tokyo to Nikko — a UNESCO World Heritage site of ancient temples among towering cedars. You'll photograph Kegon Falls, Lake Chuzenji at dawn, the ornate Toshogu Shrine, and the endless Jizo statues of Kanmangafuchi Abyss. Traditional ryokan accommodation. The cost is €1,500 per person (twin share). Mention it when you enquire.

The Tokyo add-on is a 3-night post-expedition extension in the city. This is not the Day 1–2 highlights — it's the deep cuts: Yanaka cemetery at dawn, Shimokitazawa backstreets, Odaiba at blue hour, Tsukiji outer market, and Kabukicho neon at night. City centre hotel. Neil leads every session. The cost is €1,000 per person (twin share). You're already in Tokyo — just extend your stay.
Are editing sessions mandatory?
Not at all. All editing sessions are optional. We know how tiring long shooting days can be — if you'd rather rest during downtime, that's completely fine. Neil makes himself available during midday breaks and occasional evenings for those who want feedback on their images. The final portfolio review on Day 13 is also optional, though most participants find it invaluable. No pressure, ever.
How do I secure my place and what are the payment terms?
A €1,200 deposit holds your place immediately — click the button above to pay via Stripe. The remaining balance (€5,190) is due 8 weeks before the departure date. With only 5 spots on this trip, places go quickly — the Japan 2025 workshop sold out 6 months in advance.
Do I need to speak Japanese?
No. Neil handles all navigation, bookings, and communication throughout the trip. Japan is also one of the more foreigner-friendly countries to travel in — most major signs and menus have English. A few words of Japanese go a long way and Neil will share a short cheat sheet before departure.
What is the fitness level required?
This trip is rated moderate. Expect 5–10km of walking on most days, often on uneven terrain — forest paths, temple steps, cobbled post-town streets. Some days start before dawn and finish after sunset. You don’t need to be an athlete, but you should be comfortable on your feet for extended periods. If you have any concerns, mention it when you enquire.
